Whenever you think of Chinese New Year festivities, you would think of the iconic Yee Sang, a Chinese tossed salad that symbolises prosperity.
Most commonly practised in Southeast Asia, a typical Yee Sang consist of sashimi, strips of vegetable like cucumber and carrot, pickled ginger, pomelo pulps, peanuts, pillow crackers, vegetable oil, five spice powder, and plum sauce – ingredients are put together in a specific order that holds significance.
Yee Sang can be commonly purchased in Chinese restaurants, with each restaurant having its own variation of topping combinations.
This is no exception to Restoran Foong Yet (风月海鲜饭店), a Chinese restaurant located in Kepong, a humble town in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Each year during the Chinese New Year season, they would set their expert hands to prepare the best Yee Sang for their loyal customers.
What allows their take on Yee Sang to stand out among their peers is the restaurant’s unique plum sauce. Prepared with a secret homemade recipe, the sauce is designed to elevate the taste of the sashimi or jellyfish slices while complimenting the rest of the toppings in the dish.
Restoran Foong Yet’s humble beginnings
The history of the family-owned business spans 70 years. Their first establishment was actually a tea house selling Chinese steamed buns and dim sum that were popular with trishaw riders who frequented the restaurant. The business changed and adapted over the years, becoming Restoran Hong Ngek, currently owned by Liew Hing Ling, a traditional Hokkien restaurant located in Jalan Tun HS Lee. Its signature dish, is an authentic fried rice cake, with roots in Fujian Xinghua-style dishes from northern China.
In 2005, the business saw growth with Restoran Foong Yet established as a second branch located in Kepong, specialising in seafood dishes. Today, Restoran Foong Yet is run by Poh Lum and his wife, Lee Li Keng and they have not looked back since. The husband and wife duo have been running the restaurant since 2010 and have continued to capture the hearts of KLites with their range of delicious seafood dishes.
Modernising a family’s legacy
Operating a restaurant definitely requires a lot of attention to detail in various aspects. Aside from maintaining customer satisfaction, inventory checks, order management, as well as staff management, are as important to ensure the business runs smoothly.
As popularity continues to soar for Restoran Foong Yet, including the expected high footfall during the festive seasons, Poh Lum and Li Keng have made the leap forward to digitalising their operations with Qashier.
Digitalising has helped the duo streamline many operations that traditionally would have been manually carried out.
Managing menu items and pricing has been made easier. With inflation and other factors in play, it’s easy to keep prices updated and competitive amidst the current economic landscape. Instead of staff taking time and effort to manually update menus, Qashier makes the process accurate and seamless.
Accurate and up-to-date pricing is important, so merchants like Restoran Foong Yet are paid the correct amount every time. Utilising QashierPOS‘s full-function smart terminal, updating pricing across menus and sales tracking is now a breeze for the duo to stay on top of their operations.
Moreover, the concern for insufficient staff and human errors can be prevented as processes are online over a cloud-based system – allowing all information to be stored online and made accessible anywhere, anytime on any internet-enabled device.
The business utilises the QashierX1 terminal and Qashier’s ordering app across 3 tablets. Accepting payments is even easier with Qashier terminals’ portable form factor equipped with wireless payment features and a built-in receipt printer. Cash or cashless payments, this feature allows flexibility for staff to collect payments from the table side and immediately issue receipts to customers, improving the speed of their customer service.
To enhance communications between on-ground waiters and kitchen staff, Restoran Foong Yet also equips its POS system with a kitchen chit-printing device that automatically sends customers’ orders to the kitchen for food preparation. Supplementing this is QR codes on every table that allow customers to directly place their orders online and send them directly to the kitchen – no additional waitstaff is needed.
