BCRS for Retailers: How to Charge the 10-Cent Deposit in Singapore, and How Qashier Makes It Simple

BCRS for Retailers: How to Charge the 10-Cent Deposit in Singapore, and How Qashier Makes It Simple

Quick answer: Yes, BCRS applies to retailers. Every pre-packaged drink in a plastic bottle or metal can from 150ml to 3 litres that carries the BCRS Deposit Mark is sold with a 10-cent deposit, and from 1 October 2026 every regulated drink must carry the mark. Retailers charge the drink price plus the 10-cent deposit, with the deposit shown separately on the receipt. With Qashier, you mark a drink as BCRS Eligible once and the deposit is added at checkout, while your product price stays the same.

Your customers already know the price on the shelf. When they reach the counter, they expect that price, plus 10 cents for every eligible bottle or can, shown in a way they can read at a glance.

This guide covers how BCRS works for retail stores in Singapore, what the official guidance says about charging the deposit, and how Qashier helps you keep the price on the shelf and the deposit on the receipt.

Does BCRS apply to retailers?

Yes. Supermarkets and other retailers charge customers the 10-cent deposit for each beverage container sold that bears the BCRS Deposit Mark. The deposit is refunded to your customer when they return the empty container at a Return Right machine.

From 1 October 2026, only regulated drinks in containers with the Deposit Mark and the new BCRS barcode can be sold in Singapore. If your store sells bottled or canned drinks, the deposit is now part of every sale that includes one. For a full overview of the scheme, read our BCRS Singapore guide for businesses.

Which drinks in your store are covered?

BCRS covers pre-packaged drinks in plastic and metal containers from 150ml to 3 litres. The quickest check is the label, since every regulated container carries the Deposit Mark and a new barcode.

Covered by BCRS: Drinks in plastic bottles and metal cans.

Not covered by BCRS: Paper cartons and Tetra Pak, glass bottles, pouches, and drinks served in cups or jugs.

For the full eligibility rules, visit bcrs.sg.

How the BCRS deposit moves through your store

The deposit travels with the drink from your supplier to your customer. When producers sell drinks to you, the 10-cent deposit is included in what you pay.

Your customer then pays you the drink price plus the 10-cent deposit at checkout. When they return the empty container at a Return Right machine, they get their 10 cents back from the scheme.

How to charge the BCRS deposit at checkout

The BCRS guide for retailers sets out a simple way to charge every eligible drink. Your customer pays the drink price, which remains subject to GST, plus the 10-cent deposit, which is not subject to GST.

IRAS asks businesses to show the BCRS deposit separately from other items on tax invoices, simplified tax invoices and receipts. You can read the full details on the IRAS GST and BCRS Deposit page.

For shelf prices, major retailers have chosen to display drink prices without the 10-cent deposit and include it on the receipt instead. The BCRS guide notes that retailers may wish to align with this approach.

What your team should look out for

The BCRS guide for retailers highlights two things for your team to know.

The Deposit Mark and new barcode: Plastic and metal drinks from 150ml to 3 litres should carry both, which shows the drink carries the 10-cent deposit.

Where refunds happen: Customers get their deposit back at designated return points such as Return Right machines. They can find the nearest one at returnright.sg.

How Qashier handles BCRS for your store

Qashier is ready for BCRS across QashierHQ, QashierPOS and QashierEats, with the deposit built into the way your store already sells.

Keep the price on the shelf

Tick BCRS Eligible on a drink in QashierHQ or on your POS, and Qashier adds 10 cents per item at checkout. Your product prices stay exactly as they are, so nothing on your shelves needs to change.

Bring your whole drinks range across at once

Mark many products together with Product Bulk Update, or set the BCRS Eligible column in the Create Products from Excel template. New products can be marked as you add them with Product Bulk Create.

A receipt your customers understand

Each eligible item shows its 10-cent deposit at checkout, and the payment breakdown lists the deposit as its own line. Printed receipts, e-receipts and invoices all show the deposit separately, labelled as not subject to GST.

Your sales figures stay your sales figures

Total Sales in your QashierHQ reports excludes the BCRS deposit, which is tracked in its own BCRS Deposit tab under Full Report. You can see your total deposit collected, items sold, items waived and amount waived at a glance.

Ready for your online shop too

If you sell through QashierEats, tick BCRS Eligible on the product under Online Ordering. The deposit is then included in your online orders as well.

How to set up the BCRS deposit for your store in Qashier

Setting up takes five steps in QashierHQ.

To update your whole drinks range at once, use Product Bulk Update under Bulk Action. You can also mark products directly on your POS through Manage Products.

Our step-by-step BCRS setup guide walks you through every screen.

Where to see your BCRS deposits in Qashier

In QashierHQ: Go to Money & Finance, then Full Report, and open the BCRS Deposit tab. The tab appears for every report type except QashierEats and delivery platforms. The Transactions page also has a BCRS Deposit column that comes with you when you export to Excel.

On your POS: Go to Reports, then Sales Information, to find the BCRS Deposit section. It is included whenever you print or email the report.

Frequently asked questions

Do retailers have to charge the BCRS deposit?

Yes. A 10-cent deposit applies to each regulated drink sold with the Deposit Mark, and from 1 October 2026 every regulated drink sold in Singapore must carry the mark.

Should the deposit be included in my shelf prices?

Major retailers display drink prices without the deposit and include it on the receipt, and the BCRS guide notes that retailers may wish to align with this approach. In Qashier, your product prices stay the same and the deposit is added at checkout.

Is the BCRS deposit subject to GST?

No. The 10-cent deposit is not subject to GST, while the drink price remains subject to GST for GST-registered businesses. See the IRAS GST and BCRS Deposit page for full details.

Do customers get their deposit back at my store?

Customers get their deposit back at designated return points such as Return Right machines. They can find the nearest machine at returnright.sg.

Can I waive the deposit for some items?

Yes. Tap Waive BCRS Deposit at checkout and choose the exact number of containers to waive. Every other eligible item keeps its deposit.

Is the BCRS deposit included in my Total Sales?

No. Total Sales in your QashierHQ reports excludes the deposit, which is tracked separately in the BCRS Deposit tab.
