Quick answer: BCRS Singapore, the Beverage Container Return Scheme, adds a refundable 10-cent deposit to pre-packaged drinks in plastic bottles and metal cans from 150ml to 3 litres. Since 1 October 2026, every regulated drink sold in Singapore carries it. With Qashier, you mark a drink as BCRS Eligible once, and the deposit is added at checkout, shown on its own line on the receipt and tracked separately in your reports.
Your customers already know what to look for. They pick up a can or a bottle, spot the Deposit Mark, and expect 10 cents to appear on the bill. What they want is for it to be clear at the counter, with one simple line that shows exactly what they get back when they return the container.
This guide covers how BCRS works in Singapore, what it means for retail shops and F&B outlets, and how Qashier is ready to handle the deposit for you from your very next sale.
What is BCRS in Singapore?
The Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS) is Singapore's national deposit scheme for drink containers. It is run by BCRS Ltd, a not-for-profit operator licensed by the National Environment Agency (NEA), and it is designed to get more bottles and cans recycled.
The scheme works as a simple loop. Your customer pays a 10-cent deposit when they buy an eligible drink. They return the empty, uncrushed container to a Return Right machine and get their 10 cents back. Return Right machines are located across Singapore, and customers can find the nearest one at returnright.sg.
Which drinks carry the BCRS deposit?
The deposit applies to pre-packaged drinks in plastic bottles and metal cans from 150ml to 3 litres that carry the BCRS Deposit Mark. The mark is printed on the label, so it is the quickest way for you and your team to tell which drinks are covered.
Containers without the mark carry no deposit and cannot be refunded at a Return Right machine. For the full list of eligible products and exclusions, visit bcrs.sg.
Key BCRS dates for businesses
1 April 2026: The scheme began, along with a transition period for clearing older stock.
April to September 2026: Drinks with and without the Deposit Mark could be sold side by side.
1 October 2026: All regulated drinks sold in Singapore must carry the Deposit Mark, and the 10-cent deposit applies to every one of them.
In short, if your business sells packaged drinks, the deposit is now part of every sale that includes one.
How the BCRS deposit works for retail shops
Retailers collect the deposit from customers at checkout on behalf of the scheme operator. Because the deposit belongs to the scheme rather than to your sale, it helps to see it separately from your own sales figures.
For supermarkets, convenience stores and minimarts, that means every eligible drink at checkout adds 10 cents to the bill. The smoother that line appears, the quicker every customer moves through the queue.
How BCRS works for F&B outlets
F&B outlets have two ways to take part, and the right one depends on how you serve your customers.
Outlets on the Return Right F&B Scheme (RRFS) collect back containers from drinks consumed during dine-in, without charging customers the 10-cent deposit. Customers leave the container behind, and the outlet returns it.
Outlets not on the RRFS sell eligible drinks with the 10-cent deposit included. Customers then return the empty container at any Return Right machine to get their deposit back.
The RRFS covers drinks consumed during dine-in. For the full details, including how takeaway and delivery orders work for your outlet, see NEA's guide for F&B operators.
How Qashier handles the BCRS deposit for you
Qashier is ready for BCRS across QashierHQ, QashierPOS and QashierEats, with the deposit built into how you already sell. Here is what that looks like day to day.
Set it once and every sale follows
Tick BCRS Eligible on a drink in QashierHQ or on your POS, and Qashier adds 10 cents per item at checkout. Your product prices stay exactly as they are, so there is nothing to recalculate.
Bring your whole drinks range across in one go
Update many products at once with Product Bulk Update, or fill in the BCRS Eligible column in your Excel upload. Modifiers can carry the deposit too, so drinks sold as add-ons are covered as well.
Clear at the counter
Each eligible item shows its 10-cent deposit at checkout, and the payment breakdown lists the deposit as its own line. Your customer sees the same line on their printed receipt or e-receipt, so they know exactly what comes back to them.
Waive the deposit whenever the customer doesn't pay it
Tap Waive BCRS Deposit at checkout and choose how many containers to waive. The rest of the order keeps its deposit, so every receipt shows the right amount.
Your sales figures stay your sales figures
Total Sales in your QashierHQ reports excludes the BCRS deposit, which is tracked in its own BCRS Deposit tab. You can see your total deposit collected, items sold, items waived and amount waived at a glance.
Ready for online orders too
For QashierEats, tick BCRS Eligible on the product under Online Ordering and the deposit follows your online sales. For foodpanda products, a Collect BCRS Deposit option sits in the product settings, and our support team can help you decide when to use it.

From 1 October 2026, all regulated drinks sold in Singapore must carry the Deposit Mark and the 10-cent deposit. If your business sells them, the deposit applies to those sales.

No. Total Sales in your QashierHQ reports excludes the deposit, which is tracked separately in the BCRS Deposit tab.
Is the BCRS deposit subject to GST?
Qashier shows the deposit on its own line, labelled as not subject to GST. For guidance on your own business, IRAS publishes details on GST and the BCRS deposit.
