1. Bubur Lambuk

Traditionally, Muslims prefer to break their fast with sweet or soft food that is easy on the stomach. One popular dish is the bubur lambuk, which translates to “scattered porridge” due to its cooking method. Ingredients such as rice, meat, and onions are typically thrown into a single pot, resulting in a delicious and hearty porridge perfect for breaking fast.

2. Murtabak

Another popular favourite is Murtabak, a well-known street food you can find at Ramadhan bazaars. “Murtabak” is derived from the Arabic word “Muttabaq“, which means “folded”. This delectable dish consists of pan-fried bread filled with meat stuffing and then folded into perfect squares. There’s a variety of meat choices you can choose from – minced beef, chicken, or even mutton!

If you crave some good murtabak, swing by Restoran Mahbub in Kuala Lumpur.  Located in both Bangsar and Damansara Damai, they have a range of must-try selections of murtabak and roti dishes. Priced at around RM10, you can fill your murtabak with chicken, beef, sardine, or if you are feeling adventurous, why not try all three? Aside from their murtabak, you should also indulge in their signature Nasi Briyani Ayam Madu (Honey Chicken Briyani), a staple since 1974.

3. Lemang & Kuah Kacang

Another traditional dish is the lemang & kuah kacang – savoured by dipping the aromatic glutinous rice (lemang) in the rich peanut sauce (kuah kacang) that is slightly sweet yet comes with a hint of spiciness. 

What makes this dish unique is its cooking method. The aroma of the glutinous rice comes from coconut milk, cooked inside a bamboo cylinder over an open fire. Paired with the creamy and nutty peanut sauce, their flavours complement each other to create a delicious and satisfying meal. 

While it is a traditional Eid dish, you can also find this during the Ramadhan season. One famous spot is the Lemang Daun Lerek Greenwood located at Batu Caves. Lemang aside, this stall also sells black glutinous rice lemang that comes with two kinds of rendang* rendang bash (wet version) and rendang kering (dry version).

Rendang – a meat dish originating from Minangkabau, Indonesia. Prepared with coconut milk and various spices, rendang is cooked at low temperature for a long time. This produces soft, tender meat with spices that seep into it.

4. Nasi Kerabu

Although not exclusive to Ramadhan, Nasi Kerabu is a popular iftar dish among Malaysians. This unique dish features blue rice and various side dishes such as shredded vegetables, salted eggs, fermented fish paste, stuffed green chillies, grated coconut, and fish crackers. Traditionally, it is the butterfly pea flower that gives the rice its distinct bluish-purple hue. 

One of the most visited places is Restoran Kak Som at Jalan Raja Muda Musa, Kuala Lumpur. Their menu features the all famous Nasi Kerabu where its fluffy rice is served along with minced ulam (traditional salad) and a few splash of sambal (chilli paste) and budu (fish sauce). 

5. Ikan Bakar & Sotong Bakar

If you are a seafood lover, one delicacy that you will not miss at bazaars is the sotong bakar (grilled squid) and ikan bakar (grilled fish). These dishes are commonly served with sambal sauce and wrapped in banana leaves. Some would prefer having them with a side of rice, making it a wholesome meal altogether.
