Back in 2019, nobody would have guessed that paying by QR code would become as popular as it is today. The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated the move to scan-to-pay, and merchants and customers alike discovered how simple and convenient it is — which pushed the whole world towards a cashless society remarkably quickly.
The QR code has become the payment innovation that businesses large and small, right down to the smallest trader, have taken up. We are all used to shops printing a PromptPay QR on a piece of paper for customers to scan, or opening the QR in a banking app when settling up with friends over dinner. But have you ever noticed that at some shops you do not have to type in the amount, the way you do when paying a friend back for lunch? That is because there are in fact two kinds of QR code a merchant can use to take payment.
Type 1: the static QR code
A static QR code is one that never changes. It is generated once and stays the same for good, which means a merchant can print it out and leave it up at the counter permanently. The customer has to key in the amount themselves.

Say you run a coffee shop and want to take payment by QR. You print your shop account's QR code onto paper or a sign. When a customer pays, they open their banking app, scan the QR code, type in the price of what they are buying and confirm. You then check that the money really has come through, and the payment is done.
Type 2: the dynamic QR code
A dynamic QR code is different every time it is generated. This kind of code is produced by a program or a mobile app, so a merchant cannot print it and leave it out, because the information in the QR changes constantly — and the merchant can put the price of the sale into the code.
The customer's payment goes like this.
- The merchant rings up the sale, and the system generates the QR code.
- The customer scans it with their app, and the amount due appears automatically.
- The customer confirms, and the money lands in your account.
So how do you set up a dynamic payment QR of your own?
Generating a dynamic QR is different from a static one, because the details have to be entered afresh each time and the code has to be created through an app or a program. Do not let that worry you, though: even with no technical knowledge at all it is straightforward, once you have Qashier POS.
Qashier POS is a shop management system that supports QR scan-to-pay. If you use Qashier POS, our specialists can connect the POS to your shop's QR code, and from then on, whenever you ring up a sale, a dynamic QR code appears for the customer to scan and pay.
Why switching to a dynamic payment QR is worth it
Paying is easier for customers
Scan-to-pay is convenience itself: no cash to carry, no waiting for change. The customer opens the app, scans, and the amount due appears immediately. Best of all, they do not have to key in the sum themselves, which makes paying that much easier.Taking payment is safer
Dynamic QR gives a merchant confidence that the customer has entered the right amount, cuts down the time spent checking, and helps guard against fraud as well.- Service becomes more agile
With payment made quick and easy, your shop will no longer have long queues at the till or slow service, and you will have more attention to spare for the rest of the business.
